About Me

Every painting begins long before the brush touches canvas.

Portrait of the Artist

My Story

Lawrence Ooko Wasonga(b."97) is a Nairobi-based contemporary artist, born and partly raised in Homa Bay, Kenya. Ooko commands a dynamic range of styles, working primarily in acrylics on canvas while dabbling in pastels and oils.

A free spirit and superb storyteller, he tells his tales most vividly through painting.

I view art as the highest expression of human intelligence, an invitation for audiences to travel, feel, learn, and question societal norms.

His work transcends borders and cultural boundaries, exploring themes from everyday food traditions to civil rights movements, activism, and portraiture that captures the essence of individuals and communities.

I'm an expressive painter who doesn't shy away from vibrant colors, after all, in a universe filled with darkness a little color goes a long way.I derive most of my ispiration from everyday life, themes of interest to me and weirdly enough, dreams.

My love for art started when I was a kid who was always led to blieve that I had the worst handwriting in school so it felt nice when I could draw better than most kids in my class, felt like a superpower.Me and art have been inseprable ever since, in more than one medium.

My Philosophy

"Freedom is what art provides us, freedom to express, feel, vent, share, love, hate and even appreciate.I cannot and will not try to confine art.it is a disservice to confine oneself to a single space, identity, or way of thinking."

Art, for me, is activism and empathy in visual form,it dissolves barriers, provokes dialogue, and reminds us of our shared humanity. I invite viewers to step beyond familiar horizons and explore the world through my work.If for nothing else I hope my art evokes something in you.
